Hi Shedders
This month has kicked away with a fair bit of activity in and around the Shed.
Our AGM was a very well attended event and we got through the necessary items fairly quickly which meant that appetites were up after all that talking and listening. The sausage rolls, cakes & asparagus rolls became available just before midday and were enjoyed by some very hungry attendees. It was fantastic to see so many of you enjoying a cuppa and a chat with fellow members.
Those that attended the AGM had the opportunity to have a walk-through of the ½ round barn and see for themselves the great progress that has been made in such a short time and in the last week Bruce Larnach and some willing helpers have closed in the front wall with corrugated iron sheets and are getting it ready for the next stage which is making and hanging the doors.
The crew in the Engineering Section are extremely busy at present manufacturing a quantity of large security grilles to go over the windows of an old run down building in Hamilton that has been taken over by our friends in the wood turners association (sounds vaguely familiar doesn’t it) who will renovate it for their own use. The building currently has ply sheets over the windows and wood turners want to rip those sheets off and replace them with the grilles which will allow light to flood into the building while they work on it. Then once the grilles are done…..our Engineers start work on the racking for the timber store and also the metal frames for the doors to the ½ round….so they have plenty in front of them.
There’s still plenty of jobs coming in the door from the general public……for instance Barry Harding has started to manufacture a quantity of Mahjong Boards for a local group and they look like they will be works of art.
Peter Moore is about halfway through making a quantity of large ply boxes to be used as display plinths for the Mobility Centre in Hamilton, they will display disability products on them and each plinth will be at the correct height for someone in a wheelchair to get a good view of the products.
Rob Saywell has set up an area to the right as you come through the door into the workshop which he is calling “The Repair Shop” where we will do repairs of toys/ furniture or whatever that come in the door.
Bruce McComb is doing a great job of sorting through all the donated “stuff” that comes through the roller door at the far end of the Shed and he is continually allocating items for sale or retention. The storeroom behind the Engineering area is an amazing stockpile of goodies. If you are looking for something chances are it will be in that store.
Plus there are some very interesting personal projects that some of our members are working on…..come down and have a look.
Les Walsh and his Market Crew had another incredible day at the Trash & Treasure Market….in appalling weather with horizontal rain showers at times….they still managed to make $390 which is a welcome addition to our bank account.
Our (closed) Facebook site is running very well with lots of good photos and comments and f you haven’t joined yet contact Eric Hill to get on it.
Bruce Hancock our Web Master has made some changes to the Website (www.cambridge-menzshed.co.nz ) and if you get the chance have a look at it.
There is a full list of our sponsors/donors which is well worth looking through as it will give you some idea of the diverse range of people/companies who have helped us along the way. Plus if you get the opportunity to support any of them by using their products or services please do so its another way we can give back to them.
Speaking of which our latest couple of donors are…..Forsyth Barr Cambridge and Niagara Sawmilling Company who each donated sizeable dollar amounts to our Shed.
On a more basic note we create a fair amount of dust and debris and are short of what used to be called yard brooms or reasonably wide brooms to sweep the workshop floor. If any of you happen to have a spare broom that you no longer use feel free to bring it in.
Remember…. you don‘t need to be actively working in the Shed to enjoy “smoko” at 10am sharp…come down and have a cuppa and a chin wag with the other guys….the biscuit jar is usually well worth a look and sometimes if you’re lucky there’s a cake or some scones.
Stay well and keep that flu at bay.
Regards
