February Newsletter

Hi Shedders

Thought it was time to update you on Shed matters……

Garry our hard working Treasurer is currently sending out the membership renewal notices for those of us who have their joining anniversary this month and will follow on each month as the year progresses depending on when you joined.

So a couple of things related to this….if you receive an invoice please pay it by the due date otherwise Garry has to start chasing you which is work he doesn’t need.

Secondly if you have decided that the MenzShed is not for you and don’t want to renew your membership please do the decent thing and send Garry an email advising him of that.

And last but not least if you do want to continue (and I hope you all do) please think about participating on a regular basis this year. We don’t mind if you do nothing else but come to the Shed for a cuppa at 10am, but remember we now have a fully operational Engineering Workshop in the half round barn and Neale and the guys would love to show you around and get you involved. We also have a dedicated Wood Turning area which is now set up where the old engineering area was and a brand spanking new Lathe along with the original one and they are there for your use/tuition so if you’ve always fancied doing a bit of wood turning come on in and have a go.

Following on from that as you all know we had a survey of the membership late last year re the opening hours and 20 of you expressed a desire to have the Shed open in the weekend as you couldn’t attend during the week…..Mike Gast has put a lot of work into this and we will run the first of a trial Saturday morning opening on the 28th February when we will open between 10am and 2pm……obviously as you are all aware it’s not just a matter of throwing the doors open, we have to have a Duty Manager responsible for the day and who will open and close the Shed. So if you are one of the 20 who wanted the Shed open in the weekend the 28th is your chance to participate. Depending on the turnout we will assess frequency and day for the following month.

There have been some queries relating to members borrowing tools from the Shed……we have a hard and fast rule that the tools are to be used at the Shed for all the members and not taken home……if anyone has borrowed something and forgotten to bring it back, please do so. Many thanks.

We are trialling a “job notification scheme” starting this month and being run by Bruce Hancock, in an effort to get more of you involved in activities at the Shed. This will take the form of an email hitting your inbox, potentially twice a week. It will contain a photo and description of something that a member of our Cambridge community has brought in to us to be restored/repaired/renovated/made. The purpose of the email is to let you all know the jobs that are coming in and give you the opportunity to put your hand up to be involved in getting that done. If you see something that you want to get involved in then reply to the email address and that project will either be yours or you will become part of a team doing it, depending on the size of the job. Please make the effort and get engaged in our Shed’s activities.

Finally….this month (the 15th February) is the anniversary of our first year of operation and we are going to have a “very special” end of month BBQ on Friday the 27th February with everyone attending in the running for a multitude of prizes….which are all top secret and have been put together by your Social Committee who have been working tirelessly on this Anniversary Event.

So if you do nothing else this year come along to the BBQ on the 27th the last Friday of the month to enjoy a beautifully cooked sausage maybe pick up a terrific prize and have a yarn to some like minded individuals.

 Stay healthy and safe.

 Regards
